A Thought
The ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom. What a powerful capacity we have as human beings! No other species can think, plan, and imagine like we do. We can get behind the wheel of a car and imagine where we want to go, and then go there. We can think about a trip we want to take, and then plan and take the steps that will bring us to our dream destination. We can envision what we want to eat for dinner and then get the ingredients, prepare them, and eat the meal we thought about earlier that day.
This ability to have a vision and make it a reality is Habit #2 in Stephen Covey’s book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. Habit 2 tells us to “Begin with the End in Mind”. To consider the bigger picture of your life and where you are going so that you can align your life activities with the direction you want to go. Without vision, we tend to drift, go in circles, or veer sharply off course. In the busyness of day to day we can get caught in the activity trap. Being busy for busyness sakes, but not really living the life we want to live or going where we want to go.
The idea behind “begin with the end in mind” is that all things are created twice. First, there is the mental or first creation (vision), and next there is a physical or second creation. We can have a vision for what we want to eat and where we want to go on vacation, and we can also have bigger visions. A vision for who you want to be, a vision for your business, health, relationships, and even for that secret dream that’s been buried deep in your heart.
An Invitation
All things are created twice. Where are you when it comes to visioning? Do you spend a lot of time dreaming about possibilities, but never making them a physical reality? Perhaps you get an idea and jump right into action without taking the time to consider the vision, the bigger picture and how it fits in with where you want to go. Maybe you’re a little bit of both. Wherever you are, you can develop and refine the habit of visioning, and move your life forward with greater intention and satisfaction. Coaching can help!
This week I invite you to consider a change you want to see in your life. Begin with the end in mind. Create a vision for how your life will be different once this change is in place. Connect this change to your heart. Why is this meaningful to you? Keep looking for the heart of the matter. This will provide the motivation you need to make the change or the knowledge that it’s not that important to you. Either way you will have greater clarity about your vision.
Visioning is a huge part of the coaching process. I help you to get unstuck and move forward with calm, clarity, and confidence. Schedule a time to chat with me to learn more. Have a great week!
